Athletes train hard and play hard. There is often a cost for pushing the body to its limits.
Injury is one of those costs. An athlete may go years without injury, but once one occurs some athletes seem to be plagued by them. There is good reason for this, one that conventional thinking with its emphasis on treating symptoms does not understand.

Health is usually thought of a a person functioning normally without disease. Most people think health means not being sick or in pain. Health is much more than this. It is all about optimal function and well being. For an athlete it is not just getting from one place to another or achieving their goal. An athlete seeks peak performance. This in not just a matter of endurance, it is more complex. It is a harmony of cooperation among every single part of the body and mind. The key word is OPTIMAL. Take for example a car. A car can run poorly and still get you from place to place, but if you want to race, the car must function at peak performance. 

After an injury athletes work hard to get back to where they were before injury. While some athletes achieve this most athletes are frustrated by how slow they heal. Many notice that even after they have healed from an injury they never quite get back to where they were before the injury. The reason for this is even if an injury heals it leaves behind restrictions which hamper performance. Restrictions can cause habitual overuse of muscles, dehydration of fascia, and partially contracted muscles. 

WHY SHOULD AN ATHLETE WORRY ABOUT RESTRICTIONS?  After all we have this concept of NO PAIN, NO GAIN! The answer is simple; it affects the performance of an athlete.
The body will compensate and the more muscles in a constant state of contraction and unbalance, the less energy is available to the rest of the body for performance, coordination is thrown off. For many people this would not matter but to an athlete being off just a little can make the difference between 1st place or 2nd. 

We have all seen athletes who seem invulnerable, but once that first injury happens they seem plagued by injuries. This is because every muscle, tendon, ligament is connected by fascia. This 3 dimensional webbing of connective tissue wraps around these tissues. This is why a restriction in one part of the body pulls on all other parts of the body. This pulling creates extra tension in other areas creating a higher susceptibility to injury. The force of impact can no longer be distributed throughout the entire body as these restrictions prevent it. THIS MEANS THAT EVEN A LESS FORCEFUL IMPACT INCREASES PROBABILITY OF SERIOUS INJURY. It also explains why therapy that addresses only the injured area is not always effective. 

Luckily, the body is continually accommodating. This means that all we need to do is remove the restriction and the body will accommodate to a better place. The body no longer needs to maintain tension or partial contraction, so the body regains optimal coordination, balance and the energy used by those muscles is now available to improve performance.
